If your Kafka service is running within a virtual private cloud (VPC), you may need public access for some external systems or a subset of consumers.

To enable public access:

  1. Log in to the Aiven web console and select your service.

  2. On the Overview page, scroll down to the Advanced configuration section and click Add configuration option.

  3. Select public_access.kafka and switch it on.
For Kafka Connect or Kafka Rest, select public_access.kafka_connect or public_access.kafka_rest respectively.

  4. Click Save advanced configuration.

The Overview page now has an Access Route setting with Public and Dynamic options.

  5. Select Public to see the public URL for your service.
Note: You can change this setting without any downtime for your service.
