Note: You can also configure the Kafka parameters in the Aiven web console, under the Advanced configuration section of the Overview page for your service, or using the user_config options via the API.

To configure your Kafka parameters with the command-line client:

  1. Install the client from the Aiven command-line client repository.

  2. Run the following command to see all available options and allowed values:

    avn service types -v

  3. Run the service update command to set the parameters.
For example, to set message.max.bytes, run the following command:

    avn service update SERVICE_NAME -c "kafka.message_max_bytes=newmaximumbytelimit"

Note: When you changing the message.max.bytes value, remember to change your client settings as well. Otherwise, you may encounter issues with processing Kafka messages.

Most of the Kafka settings cause the Kafka service to restart when you change them. Aiven for Apache Kafka restarts nodes one at a time to ensure minimal disruption to service availability. However, it will take a few minutes before the new settings are in use when you change them.
